ANSYS Academic Solutions

ANSYS, Inc. is at the forefront of providing engineering simulation software globally for academic teaching and research applications.

ANSYS provides a highly scalable portfolio of academic products based on several usage tiers: Associate, Research and Teaching. Each tier includes a range of high value noncommercial products that bundle a broad range of physics and advanced coupled field (multiphysics) solver capability. We also provide Academic Toolbox products that address more specialized preprocessing & solver concerns.

ANSYS Academic

The Academic Teaching products are intended for class demonstrations and hands-on instruction. The Academic Research and Academic Associate products provide more flexible terms of use and unlimited numerical "headroom" suitable for doctoral and post-doctoral research projects. Please review the

pages for more details.

ANSYS Academic High-Performance Computing (HPC)

High-performance computing (HPC) is an important part of academia. The widespread availability of multi-core processors, even in laptops, allows for impressive performance gains on medium to large problem sizes. The ANSYS Academic HPC strategy provides two levels of HPC, "built-in" and "add-on" described below:

Built-In HPC: Generally, all academic products that support HPC have four HPC (4 processor, SMP) capability per task built-in. The built-in HPC capability is allocated/restricted to each task. Example: For a 25 task license of Academic Research, each user/task can access 4 HPC tasks, with a maximum of 4 HPC tasks applied per solution. Summary:

  • 4 HPC "built-in" for ANSYS CFX, ANSYS FLUENT, ANSYS Mechanical, ANSYS Multiphysics, ANSYS AUTODYN, ANSYS POLYFLOW and ANSYS Icepak solvers
  • The built-in 4 HPC will allow:
    • 1 x dual core SMP
    • 2 x dual core SMP
    • 1 x quad core SMP
    • 2 - 4 single core SMP
    • DANSYS for 2 - 4 processors
  • The HPC capability is allocated/restricted to each "task"

Add-On HPC: Generally, all Academic Research & Associate level products can extend their HPC capability with add-on HPC tasks. The add-on HPC tasks are contained in physics neutral HPC products called ANSYS Academic Research HPC and ANSYS Academic Associate HPC. These products are sold per task, and extend the HPC capability of the following solvers:

  • ANSYS Multiphysics/ ANSYS Mechanical
  • ANSYS CFX
  • ANSYS FLUENT
  • ANSYS AUTODYN
  • ANSYS POLYFLOW
  • ANSYS Icepak

Research customers can add on more HPC via ANSYS Academic Research HPC tasks. Associate customers can add on more HPC via Academic Associate HPC tasks. One task Academic Research/Associate HPC extends the base HPC ability of any one of the physics that supports HPC that is contained in the base product.

ANSYS Academic Product License Terms of Use

The ANSYS Academic Products are intended for academic rather than commercial use. The specific language used on our Academic License Form is available from your ANSYS sales contact, look at section 5 of the License Form. In summary, our academic license terms of use are as follows:

General: The analysis work performed with the Program(s) must be non-proprietary work. Licensee and its Contract Users must be or be affiliated with an academic facility. Licensee may additionally permit individuals who are students at such academic facility to access and use the Program(s). Such students will be considered Contract Users of Licensee. The Program(s) may not be used for competitive analysis (such as benchmarking) or for any commercial activity, including consulting.

Notwithstanding any terms of the Agreement to the contrary, Academic Program(s) may be accessed and used by Licensee at the Designated Site or any other location within a 50 mile radius of the Designated Site, provided that such location is within the same country as the Designated Site.  Such limitations apply to any access and/or use of the Academic Program(s), including, but not limited to, access via a VPN connection or through license borrowing.

Academic Teaching: These products may only be used for student instruction, student projects, and student demonstrations.

Academic Research: These products may only be used for degree and/or non-degree related research, student instruction, student projects, and student demonstrations.

Academic Associate: These products may may only be used for industry related research, degree and/or non-degree related research, student instruction, student projects, and student demonstrations.

The Academic toolbox products follow the terms of use of the academic products they are used with. For example the Academic HPC license terms of use are Academic Research.

Our current licensing agreement referenced on the Academic License Form is available here.

ANSYS Academic Product Licensing

The ANSYS Academic products are licensed using FLEXlm (FLEXnet), a common software license manager from Acresso Software. All the academic product licenses are floating local area network (LAN) licenses, utilizing a single, designated license server*. Since many of the ANSYS Academic products are multiple task licenses, this means that all of the tasks are floated on the server's LAN. You can install the software on as many machines connected to the LAN as you like, however the number of users who can simultaneously access the software is limited by the number of tasks you purchase (1, 5 , 25 or 50 etc). If you need just a single licensed task on a single machine, even a laptop, you just make that machine your license server & install both the licensing software & the product on the same machine. Its a very flexible licensing scheme - hence its name!

For our academic products we impose a 50 mile LAN radius which is discussed on your license form. Users can access (check out) licensed tasks from the license server if they are physically connected to the LAN, or if they are using a VPN connection. Additionally, the Academic Teaching level products have a license borrow feature that allows laptop users to check out a licensed task and then unplug from the LAN and work remotely for up to 7 days (except the "unlimited" DesignSpace feature which may not be borrowed). Borrowed tasks must stay within the 50 mile LAN radius, and you can borrow up to n-1 tasks from an n task license. A borrowed license may be returned early by reconnecting to the network & using the ANSYS Borrow Utility. Note, the license borrow feature is OFF by default. If you need this feature you must request it to be turned on at the time of your license purchase or renewal. There is no additional charge for this feature.

If you are seeking a larger LAN radius (for distance learning programs) or require a total academic software solution for an entire campus then we have that flexibility. Please discuss your requirements with your ANSYS sales person.

The following diagram explains the LAN radius:

* Note, we can provide academic product license files for either single server or three server redundant systems.

Academic Product Technical Support Policy

Academic product technical support is managed via several mechanisms based on whom you purchased our product from and whether the support request relates to ANSYS Academic products, Ansoft Academic or legacy Fluent Academic products. In all cases, technical support and access to our customer portal is only provided to customers with products that are current on TECS or lease.

ANSYS Academic (and Legacy Fluent Academic) Product Technical Support

ANSYS Academic (and Legacy Fluent Academic) product customers who purchase their products from one of our Channel Partners should direct their technical support requests to that Channel Partner.

ANSYS Academic (and Legacy Fluent Academic) product customers who purchase their academic products directly from ANSYS, Inc. should use the ANSYS Customer Portal to submit technical support requests.

  • Once logged in, navigate to Online Support > Submit Support Request
  • Select the link Submit/Update technical support requests
